Built back in 1947, the Matilija Dam is totally obsolete. Instead of storing water, the eyesore now stores sediments - shutting off the essential downstream flow that would normally replenish our beaches and favorite surf spots. Making matters worse, the dam has also prevented the endangered Southern Steelhead Trout from accessing traditional prime breeding areas for over 50 years. But there is good news! Surfrider and a host of other community organizations are working hard to help bring down this dangerous dinosaur in a safe and efficient manner that is good for the entire river & ocean ecosystem. As part of this process, representatives of the Watershed Protectiondepartment of the Ventura County Public Works Agency, Matilija Coalition, and other Matilija Project partners will update community members and stakeholders on the Project’s recent developments including technical studies, environmental analyses, design and implementation plans, and funding efforts. These Spring 2021 Project updates will be shared on Thursday, April 1st, during a special evening meeting of the Ventura River Watershed Council starting at 6:00pm on Zoom (Meeting ID: 863 5812 7927/Passcode: 870448). Want to learn more about the overall project design and efforts? In-depth updates will be provided by Watershed Protection and technical contractors starting at 1:30pm on Zoom (Meeting ID: 978 729 1235/Passcode: 2021).📸 Zack Abbey FullFull article available on venturariver.org ...
