On March 11, more than 50 peace, religious, and civil liberties organizations issued a joint statement opposing the “automatic” registration of individuals for a possible military draft and supporting the Selective Service Repeal Act to end planning and preparation for a draft. This is the the broadest and most diverse anti-draft coalition to come together in years.
The war in Iran has opened a window of opportunity for public debate about war and conscription. This is our chance to spotlight the success and significance of draft registration resistance, the failure of “self-registration” for the draft, and the *danger* as well as the *inevitable failure* of the planned attempt at “automatic” registration.
Unless we can get the law changed this year, “automatic” draft registration is scheduled to begin in December. This year is our best chance to end planning and preparation for a draft, before it is revived on a new basis that will last another generation.
