Kathy Kelly awarded 2015 Peace Prize

The US Peace Memorial Foundation has awarded its 2015 Peace Prize to The Honorable Kathy F. Kelly for inspiring nonviolence and risking her own life and freedom for peace and the victims of war. Michael Knox, Chair of the Foundation, presented the award on August 9 during an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the U.S. bombing of Nagasaki, at the site where the first atom bombs were built.

In his remarks, Knox thanked Kelly for her service, great courage, and for all that she has sacrificed. “Kathy Kelly is a consistent and clear voice for peace and nonviolence.  She is a national treasure and an inspiration to the world.” In response to her selection, Kelly said she was “grateful for the US Peace Memorial Foundation’s recognition of the realities about war and peace.”  She added: “The US Peace Memorial helps build a steadying influence, urging us to keep one foot planted amid people bearing the brunt of war, and one foot just as firmly planted amid those who nonviolently resist war making.  The US Peace Memorial Foundation helps us find our equilibrium, helps us rise.”

In addition to receiving the 2015 Peace Prize, our highest honor, Kathy Kelly has also been designated as a Founding Member of the US Peace Memorial Foundation.  She joins previous Peace Prize recipients: CODEPINK Women for Peace, Chelsea Manning, Medea Benjamin, Noam Chomsky, Dennis Kucinich, and Cindy Sheehan.  Nominees considered this year include Jodie Evans, Dr. Glenn D. Paige, Coleen Rowley, World Beyond War, and Ann Wright.  You can read about the antiwar/peace activities of all recipients and nominees in our publication, the US Peace Registry.

The US Peace Memorial Foundation directs a nationwide effort to honor Americans who stand for peace by publishing the US Peace Registry, awarding an annual Peace Prize, and planning for the US Peace Memorial in Washington, DC.  We celebrate these role models to inspire other Americans to speak out against war and for peace.

Please help us continue this important work.  Become a Founding Member and have your name permanently associated with peace.  Founding Members are listed on our website, in our publication the US Peace Registry, and eventually at the National Monument.

FINALLY A VOICE: The Birth of the Vietnam Veterans of America

FINALLY A VOICE: The Birth of the Vietnam Veterans of America is just
about finished. Seems hard to believe after 32 years. All
that’s left is titling and DVD authoring. The first
semi-public showing of the film will be at the next VVA
convention in Springfield, IL on July 24th. The completion
of the film has largely been funded by a consortium  of
Vietnam veteran foundations that pooled their resources.  I
started a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to pay off the
remaining bills and have sufficient funds to pay for
festival entry fees, boring stuff such as errors and
omission insurance that broadcasters demand, and few other
miscellaneous items. I thought perhaps VFP members would
like to know about the film. If you can, I would appreciate
it if you would send the campaign link to anyone you think
might be interested.

Golden Rule Peace Boat Sales Again!

http://www.vfpgoldenruleproject.org/
This is the Golden Rule, the first “Peace Boat” back in 1958 when it sailed towards the Marshall Islands to disrupt U.S. nuclear testing. Veterans For Peace has spent the last 5 years rebuilding the boat after it sank in a storm. Here’s a recent article and you can see the struggle goes on. The Golden Rule will sail again under Veterans For Peace auspices to promote peace, an end to war and to halt the devastation of the earth.
You can donate to this great cause at  vfpgoldenruleproject.org

INDIE GO GO FUNDRAISER

Hunting in Wartime well worth supporting. Especially moving because we see how native people, originally driven from their cultural roots by a conquering and cruel empire were further exploited and used as pawns in one of the Empire’s cruelest wars. But also how some of them persevered and somehow transcended some (but not all) of the damage they suffered in war.

The filmmaker Samantha Farinella will be traveling with the film to make sure the people who would benefit from seeing it, actually see it: veterans, Alaska Natives and Native Americans. I saw the entire film and it is very moving. You can contact Samantha to arrange a showing: Samantha Farinella
